Hard partitioning is a model of configuration in which a single system can be physically separated into multiple partitions that define the boundaries of shareability of hard resources. First introduced with the AlphaServer GS140, hard partitioning is now expanded to include the AlphaServer GS160, GS320, ES47, ES80 and GS1280 systems, which support a mixed operating system environment within a single system.
Licensing Tru64 UNIX and OpenVMS operating system and associated layered products remains consistent with today's practices.
Because hard partitions require separate database for products that employ a license manager, business practices are described in the Software Licensing Policy 5.3, System Partitioning (see below).

Adaptive Partitioned MultiProcessing (APMP) is a new model of computing in which multiple instances of operating systems execute cooperatively in a single computer. With the introduction of OpenVMS Galaxy, select Alpha systems can be partitioned to run multiple instances of OpenVMS.
Licensing for OpenVMS operating system and OpenVMS layered products on an OpenVMS Galaxy system remain consistent with today's practices. OpenVMS Galaxy is licensed per CPU.
Because each instance, or cluster of instances, in an OpenVMS Galaxy requires a separate license database for products that employ the License Management Facility (LMF), business practices are described in Software License Policy 5.3, System Partitioning (see below).
